No Pay For Jay. Dilla.

By now, most of you are aware that material from the shelved MCA Records album from J. Dilla has leaked on the Internet. Personally, I’m extremely angry and disappointed by the leak, and more disappointed by the actions of people and other web sites with their perpetuation of this unfortunate act. Everyone is so blinded by the hype, that no one sees the reality of the situation. It isn’t time for this material to be out here like this. This is it. This is the final chapter in the story of James Yancey. After this material is released, there is nothing else. These are the final pieces of music fully overseen by J. Dilla. Anything else – beats people purchase from now on and I believe there is a whole album or so worth of material that was suppose to drop on Operation Unknown – will have to be finished, mix, and touched by someone else. The MCA material is it, period!

The leaking of this album is not like any other album. Its not like there is a ton of material for this project recorded. There are probably additional tracks recorded that haven’t leaked yet, but the ones that did constitute a great deal of it. If 50 Cent or Snoop Dogg material leaks, they have avenues to combat it. The Dilla/MCA situation is completely different. This is unreleased material from a specific period in J. Dilla’s career, and the release of it takes time to get through on the legal and ownership issues. There is no going back in the studio. There is not remixing these tracks. There is nothing. Once this material leaked, the damage was done.

I’m greatly disappointed in the lack of responsibility of web sites and DJs regarding this situation. If a DJ plays or web sites leaks material of an up and coming artist that is creating a huge buzz, that does nothing but help the artist build that buzz. This is a totally different situation folks! We don’t need to build anticipation or buzz for J. Dilla. The linking of these joints on your sites or playing on your show is only self-serving, trying to earn your J. Dilla brownie points. I couldn’t get away with ANY of the things all these sites and blogs have been getting away with and the site I’m most disappointed with is Okayplayer. They should know better but they have openly linked in their daily new updates to other blogs that have CD quality tracks to download. You would think people that are fans of J. Dilla would understand the situation, but I guess they don’t. Not just them but everyone. Do we have to lay out all the facts again? Do we have to lay out the medical bills figures again? What do we have to do, really?

I have faith that when this material is properly released that most of your will purchase it, but that is not the only point. Its just not time for this material to be out here like this. This is the final chapter and it was all suppose to come when the time was right. Whoever the person who leaked this material, are you a Dilla fan at all? Would you like to look Mr. and Mrs Yancey in the face and tell them what you did? They would probably be disappointed in you and even more, KILL YOU WITH KINDNESS.

Isn’t it ironic that this material has been labeled Pay Jay? In no way are you paying James Yancey anything. You are not paying him any money. You are not paying him homage. You are not paying him respect.

Damn...

I feel you. At the same time though, you can't really expect this leak to be treated any different from other ones, despite the real life situation. A leak is a leak these days, and that's what it is. Real cats should know, of course...but it's almost like a lost cause.

Keep fighting it, though.

I agree with you, again this is the nature of what is going on in the industry. Maybe they should do something like what Radiohead did with their last album. Set up of site for donations and ask people to donate a minimum of $5 that will go to Dilla's family or even a Lupus foundation.

I believe if given opportunity to pay for this album people would and those who are going to steal are going to steal it.

Hey, I will say that I love coming across "treats" from time to time, like the next person, especially with cat's like Dilla, Dwele or D'angelo (the 3 D's), but, I tell you what, I'm STILL gonna buy 4, I repeat, 4 copies of it whenever it comes out..... JUST LIKE I DO WITH ANYTHING OF DILLA, DWELE or D'ANGELO, or any other artist that I'm sort of a "die-hard" fan of. This situation, to me, is not exactly the nature of what's going on in the industry because I don't think Dilla had anything in the world to do with the nature of what's happening with the industry, even at the time of this recording. He was ALWAYS against the grain with his. As far as the leak, Yes I'm a fan like anybody else that visits this site, I'm sure, and being a dj (not mixtape dj) I do get both sides of this situation because for me, it ain't for braggin' rights, and certainly NOT to pass a leak on! I just can't wait to hear what I know will be "life changing music" to me. And yes it does get to the point where we sometimes don't wanna wait for something to be properly released because it seems so far down the line, and we happen to come across it early, I believe that's because, with some, (who ain't just tryin to be 1st widdit) it's the knowing and anticipation of it doing something almost spiritually to the ears and soul, if that makes any kind of since. Maybe it can't quite be worded, but I will say this: After getting your hands on some "treats", whose gonna STILL "PROPERLY" support it when it's "properly" released??? Well, someone like me, and the truest of the truest fans. That's not even up for discussion.

Man, more Dilla's fam wait to release an official unreleased beats or tracks with like a double LP, more you will be in front of this situation!
You don't think so?

Unfortunatly since this sad moment 3 years ago, people can only buy the shinig, the ruff draft that we alreday have it and few tracks on stones throw.... that's it.
For exemple we heard that diamonds track on many radio show but nobody know (horace silver) where buy it...
What's the solution?
- Say to all dj to don't play dilla traacks?
- Work on a official project?

I mean, so many fan's are waiting to listen some stuff! and we are hundry to enjoy dilla music...
and i'm sure it don't takes 3 years to release a project!
So, I really wanna say Let's go people and it will be a pleasure to buy a new DDDDDiiilllllla joints.

yyyyyeeeeeaaaaahhhhhhh...

Yeah its a shame that it got leaked, but lets face it, its the age we live in now. Dilla dominated a golden era, but now a new era is takin over. Feel good that this release is so anticipated that a bootleg rip of it has just blown it into a whole new level. The people who download a prerelease pirated copy and play it on their underground radioshows, blogs or podcasts, are also the people more likely to buy the release on vinyl too, than drop it in the clubs to spread the word further.

This is a sad situation. I was able to be in the presence of Mrs. Yancey, Talib Kweli and Pete Rock during and show taped at XM. The financial situation was discussed briefly. Mrs. Yancey talked about the cost of some of the medications Dilla had to take. It was information that is not posted on the Stones Throw website, Okayplayer, Myspace. Fans don't know how critical the financial situation is for his family. Also, I think is goes without saying that this was his life, his art, most of all his possessions. To leak it without regard for damage it may cause is disrespectful to his legacy and his family. As a fan, I am conflicted. I want to hear that music. I want to hear the Frank N Dank album. I hope that this project will see a proper release. I also hope the industry can figure out a way to get music to people without over-analysing the marketing plan and budget. PAY JAY WHAT HE IS DUE!! RIP Jay Dee....Dilla Lives Forever!

well.. we can not really stop being tracks to be leaked. that is reality where we all are living at right now. most people are facing the same problems now a days. but all we can do is.. possibly let people know about him properly! that is really important. tell them the true story behind and use this time wisely as possible to overcome this tragidic moment. remember what guilty said.. "people who didn't really love rap music, who just liked it, aren't really inspired by J Dilla. but music lovers, as soon as you hear him, he influences your whole life." there are still a lot of love from him which hasn't been expressed fully yet.. and i am sure more love will be retuned back to him. it's not the end of story. what he has done to us will tells truly from what we hear for the rest of our lives.

let's be positive!

who the fuck are you and who cares about what u say?
if peeps care about dilla so much they should try to prevent the leaking of his music(see stones throw, rhymesayers...) simple as that.
nowadays u have to explore new ways of marketing and distributing music and the internet is the most important platform concerning that.
if the label would come to me and would link a deal with me in order to post the dilla album it would be great for all parties but i bet they don´t even think of that.
if you still think that kids will go to the record store and buy stuff get on ur feet and come out of wonderland.
don´t blame me for postin his stuff, when some idiot of his own team leaked it to the public.

People like !NS say, "we can't stop leaks," and that is totally absurd. It's like saying you can't help but rob or steal. Simply don't rob or steal, right?

Leaks happen by ONE PERSON choosing to put the stuff on the internet. That ONE PERSON ruins it because there thousands of people like this other guy ISDP who are only too happy to exploit the privileges afforded them by the internet by choosing when and where an artist's music will be distributed, while paying the artist nothing at all.

I happen to agree with most of what ISDP says (peeps care about dilla so much they should try to prevent the leaking of his music; nowadays u have to explore new ways of marketing) although that doesn't change the fact that is his pretty much a leech who has stuck himself onto the body of indie hip-hop music,

Don't take this too personal.. i truly worry about the situation more than what you imagine.
maybe it is a bit silly to reply back to you here.

but..

when i said "we can't stop leaks" obviosly doesn't mean that.. is okay with allowing people to rob and steal stuff.

just like you mentioned.. everything started from ONE PERSON.. but even that ONE PERSON no one has got the cotroll of him or her, not to.

it would be ideal that if everyone thinks how we are.

people don't see the true value inside. pesonally i still go out and dig records and talk to people. being in that kind of whole culture gives me so much love and soon and more i realize the true value which i might have missed out.

Unfortunetely from downloading mp3..etc hasn't got much of those experiences.

as i said before.. ALL who we are lucky enough to know about DILLA.. need to share and tell people out there what it is all about. that's our responsibility.

spread the LOVE!!!

I agree and disagree with what's said, yes it sucks that the album got leaked, but lets be honest we all knew it would come sooner or later. I remember when Slum Village released Vol.2 (the official version), it was at the same time Common's water for chocolate and the Project E.P came out (That has madlib remixes, and the look of love). The album had been bootlegged so much some people actually thought it had been officially released, but even tho it had been bootlegged people still came and bought the album, they still paid there cash.

We live in an age where leaking an album is so common most people see it as an "advanced copy". I understand and feel the rage that the album got leaked and thats a good set of revunue taken away from the family, but then again remember there was alot of red tape put on this gem by MCA, to the tru Dilla fans it's seen as a tru WOW such as myself, because you feel that sum tunes you hear about but will never actually hear. Plus some albums I feel lose that magic that status when they get released massively such as the ruff draft album. I actually have both copies, the Original (which is more a radio edit it has most the swearing cut out) and the re-released by stones throw. To me Ruff Draft was an album that everybody knows about, but should have kept its kinda cult status it has that air of rareity, that wen mass produced to me kind of got treated as if it was a normall release, but thats my opionion.

But to keep it to the point, I hear what your saying about his family and the bills not being paid, but then there are so many arguments, we could say that Busta and a good set of other artists could chip in and wave the bills left over.

But one point i'd like to say is sometimes, we may never see these gems if they don't get leaked, Dilla for one wasn't mad when they leaked Slum Village Vol.2 as he said he was greatfull as it gave him more power to manuver in the industry.

I remember that interview. He said that in his own words on the BBC show hosted by British DJ Giles Peterson back in 2001. It's a shame because this album will probably never be released publicly for everyone to experience this album. I will say that I do have this album and it is really good. If it came out on CD, I would still buy it. I guess MCA didn't think Dilla have that power to sell 3 million records in its first week, not knowing that he has developed such a cult following...especially after his death. They would probably think that because he wasn't commercial and stylized that he wouldn't sell and that's sad because he had so much talent and his beats were so soulful and deep and it made you feel things and dream dreams and see visions...lol. (Can you tell that Dilla changed my life?) I wish I had an 1/8 of a 1/5 of a third of his talent. It would also be a measure of goodwill and appreciation if Busta, Common, Qtip, Erykah...hell even Eminem (since they knew each other from the 7 and 8 mile circuit and they were cool with the late rapper Proof) could chip in and payoff all his medical expenses. The interviews did say thay the medical expenses were around $200k. I'm sure they can pull that amount together. But then they could be contributing to the pot and we just don't know it...
