February 2009 Archives
My homie DJ Buckwild put together this video with highlights from Shine On at StoopidFresh from February 10th. Again, this was such an amazing night.
From what I heard was an amazing night, here is some video footage from the Suite For Ma Dukes performance last night in Los Angeles of the finale & encore. There were numerous cameos throughout the night but this video features Posdnous of the great De La Soul and Talib Kweli performing "Stakes Is High" and Illa J doing adlibs over "Fall in Love".
In promotion from the upcoming album A Pipe Dream And A Promise from Finale, iM Records put together an interactive video game. When you beat the game, you will recieve a free mp3 download of the song "One Man Show" (prod by Black Milk). Soon, a remix with a very special guest will be available through the game.
If you want to post it on your pages, just click on the link "PUT THIS GAME ON YOUR PAGE" and copy the html code to embed it. Use your LEFT, RIGHT, and UP arrows to control.

In continuation of great labels rooted in Michigan is the Detroit-based Blank Artists. Founded in 2005 as an art/music collective, Blank Artists is another label that I am quite proud of for what they describe as a "diverse discography of electronically made music, ranging from down-tempo, funk, house, and techno." The crew just celebrated their 4th anniversary with a mind-blowing party at THC in Hamtramck.
The lastest release on Blank Artists is from Detroit DJ/producer E. Spleece titled Keyboards and Kickflips. E. Spleece's music ranges from moody downtempo bangers to house/afrobeat dancefloor rhythms in comparison to the likes of Recloose or Jazzanova. The EP also features "emerging Canada's queen of moody music" Peril Elle on two tracks. Keyboards and Kickflips is now available digitally through Blank Artists.

Another great label to have its roots in Michigan is Moodgadget. Founded in 2004 by Jakub Alexander and Adam E. Hunt (now in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, respectively) after involvement for sometime in the electronic music scene including time with Ghostly International. They describe the goal of the label as "exposing the diversity in electronically made music. They wanted to draw attention to the fact that electronic music is a process, not a genre; within its broad walls lives a plethora of sounds–everything from catchy folk to melodic techno."
One of the releases from Moodgadget I am most excited about is from 800beloved - their debut album titled Bouquet. 800beloved is the brainchild of Michigan-based singer/songwriter Sean Lynch (pictured) and is of a more post-punk/shoegaze sound akin to the The Psychedelic Furs or Echo & The Bunnymen meet My Bloody Valentine. The group's moniker is taken from a 1-800 phone number where it hints at a meger of two opposing themes as described as " The "800" representing the interest in popular culture's flimsiness while "beloved" alludes to the lyrical use of sacred, often dismal and ironically naive subject matter."
Three years in the making and with a host to numerous contributors since the project's beginning, the current incarnation of the group, Anastasiya Metesheva, Jon Elkas and Lynch, are set to release Bouquet on Moodgadget on March 3rd.

Now I have known SelfSays for a long time, but I did not realize he has heat like this in his possession. This dude is such a quiet and mild-mannered person that you really don't expect what can truly come out musically from this emcee from Michigan. With production from Samiyam, Dak, Devon, Jackhigh, Bullion, Knowledge, among others, Something Out Of Nothing are tracks that SelfSays says were just laying around, but damn, they are much more. I tip my "D" hat out to you bro. You have impressed me. Now go ahead, download it, and enjoy.

Under his Ben Benjamin alias, Midwest Product/PostPrior member Ben Mullins drops his new digital EP on Ghhosty International titled The Many Moods of Ben Benjamin Vol. 1.5. The release is describe as followed:
Vol. 1.5 is his nervous peek into the future. “Hirsute Airports” channels early Michael Jackson while exploring a kaleidoscope of themes, sending its Motown strut (and Benjamin’s breathy everyguy vocals) past wiggly slide guitars and hissing organs towards a gorgeous, string-drenched coda. ”(Swords Will) Cut Wide Open” uses a gonzo synth and slice ‘n dice vocals to hilariously funky ends, while “Somnium State of Mind”’s patient melodies and pin-pricks of contrapuntal guitar perfectly evoke the song’s titular dream-state. “Calorie Committee”’s brief, caffeinated jolt is a blast of jittery pop energy led by an echoing surf guitar, and “Mentors of Temperature” shoves the listener onto the dance floor for one last go-round, all skittering high-hats and bouncing-ball basslines.

A new thing I'm going to start doing here on Rensoul.com is to feature some of the great labels that have originated or are based in Michigan. In doing so, many of the releases may be from artists that are not necessarily from the Detroit area, but the inclusion on a Detroit based label usually means they have gained some music influence from our area. Rensoul.com is trying to be a vessel into the mind of Detroit, and show its influence on the rest of the world. With that, one of the greatest labels to come out of Michigan of all time is the electronic music gallery-house Ghostly International based out of Ann Arbor. One of their first releases of 2009 is from Buenes Aires producer named Jonas Kopp and his dancefloor banger "Cero/Flora". Visit the link below for more information and audio samples.

I'm so happy to hear good interesting music from new faces from Detroit. Thats what you get from the project The Rhyming Dictionary by the collective known as Detroit CYDI. The group consists of Detroiters Rufio Jones, Sean Uppercut, and Illingsworth along with Erik L of Flyphonic from Sweden. Illingsworth and Erik L split the production duties on the album. The Rhyming Dictionary takes a modern experimental approach to the Detroit hip-hop sound so give it a listen.
Illingsworth and Erik L have a vinyl project dropping in March on Melting Pot Music titled Northern Connection in which they will me splitting the production duties as well.

Detroit house music producer Kenny Dixon Jr. recently dropped a new vinyl EP under his Moodymann moniker titled Det.Riot '67, which for me is the most Detroit sounding music out now. The EP mixes old blaxplotation film samples and audio from the 67' riots in Detroit over Moodymann's much loved deep soulful beats. Word is that he not going to repress these once they are gone and they have been flying off store shelves. Its a must have for anyone that loves Detroit music. Look for more vinyls coming soon through his Mahogani Music label such as the Andres (aka DJ Dez) full-length album and a Promatic (Big Proof & Dogmatic) EP.

Out now via Warp Records is the album When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence from Harmonic 313, a side project from UK-borned/now Australia-based produced Mark Pritchard. Harmonic 313 is a solo off-shoot of his other side project Harmonic 33 with fellow producer Dave Brinkworth, which based off a "Detroit-style" of hip hop production. Pritchard has long been enamored with the Detroit sound, and this project is the fruit of that passion.
The album is mostly instrumental, but does feature Detroiters Phat Kat & Elzhi on the track "Battlestar". Currently, Mark has told me he is working on a remix of "Battlestar" for the song's upcoming 12" single.

Out in my home away from home, Toronto, clothing company 88Back just released a new t-shirt commemorating J. Dilla, and it can be purchase at Livestock Toronto on 116 Spadina Ave. Below is more information regarding the tee.
88BACK COMMEMORATIVE DILLA TEE:
From the city of Motown to creating a new age sound, the legend of J Dilla
is honored. This commemorative edition tee-shirt is in memory of one of
hip hop’s greatest contributors - James Dewitt Yancey. His legacy has been
set in stone through his passion, work ethic and revolution in Changing
Beats as we know it. With a sound so uniquely distinctive that appeals
directly to one’s emotions, one can only attribute those sounds that
resonate, as that of Dilla.
With the world in peril and in desperate need of change, the people
elected a new man to lead their country to help change the world. Just
like in hiphop, where disposable music, comprised of meaningless lyrics
and unoriginal beats, Dilla, the man from Detroit brought that same needed
change. The man’s ability to capture the essence of hip hop’s roots and
merging it with the relevance of the day will forever remain of his sure
genius. Mating original sounds and producing numerous timeless tracks that
keep hip hop being hip hop, we honor Jay Dee.
With the purchase of this commemorative tee-shirt you are helping support
Ma Dukes who has been diagnosed with Lupus, the condition which J Dilla
himself had suffered from. All proceeds will be donated to the Ma Dukes
Foundation. We at 88Back thank you for your support in honoring Dilla.
Forever a prolific icon to the music we love, with his sound echoed within
us, J Dilla is one for the ages and never to be forgotten.

One of my favorite homies from the Detroit techno scene Vacuum (you know him as Matt Abbott) was recently featured on the IHEARTCOMIX Records online blog. Here's footage from DJ Dez's birthday bash at Alvin's in Detroit from January 7th, 2008 of Phat Kat performing "Nasty Ain't It" with the Gorilla Funk Mob.
Last Tuesday at our J. Dilla tribute Shine On during StoopidFresh Tuesdays was amazing. The TV Bar was packed was from what I was told the biggest party the bar has since they opened under the TV Bar. The ran out of their fully stocked beer at 12:30am. The vibe was amazing all night as both rooms were bumping. House Shoes and DJ Dez held down the big room with all the guest performances while me and Sicari rocked the small front room. At the end of the night, me and Dez even rocked the small room with a crazy array of dance music like we do every Tuesday. Now that everyone came out and checked out the joint, please come back often so we can continue to house great event like this. Ma Dukes and a few other of J. Dilla's family were in attendence and we were able to raise over $3300 for the Yancey Family. Special thanks to House Shoes, Dez, Sicari and all the performers, Adrienne, Ali, Kirby, Tank, Joe, Burn Rubber, DSE @ Grand, PublicMediaGroup, Fusicology, and the whole staff at TV Bar for helping make such a beautiful night come true. Apologies to Nic Notion since we were unable to get his video dedication to J. Dilla played on the TVs at the bar - maybe we can get that YouTube'd.
If anyone has any pictures or video from the event, email me at kfresh [at] rensoul.com. I'll post pictures on the site as they come. The above picture is from Piper Carter, she has a ton of pics on Facebook. I'll post some soon. And here's some video footage from the event.

On February 12th, NPR interviewed Eothen "Egon" Alapatt, Stones Throw's general manager, about the life and legacy of J. Dilla.
Last Sunday, I guest hosted again on Minced Meat Radio on CJAM 91.5FM with Emily Copeland and we dedicated the whole show to J. Dilla. We played alot of tracks from the beginning to the end of this career, and gave some nice information/stories about Dilla and certain tracks for those that might not be completely informed. It was a dope show. We were both tired as shit. Excuse any mechanical fuck-ups on my behalf haha. Two hours just isn't enough when playing Dilla. Felt like we were just hitting the tip of the iceberg.

(Source: Press Release) - Luminary drummer and hip-hop producer Karriem Riggins will be in good company, performing with Herbie Hancock, Elton John, and Diana Krall on Sundance’s new series Spectacle: Elvis Costello With…. Riggins was called upon to play drums on two of the season’s episodes, first with Herbie Hancock (airing February 4th 9:00 PM EST), and second with Diana Krall, with whom he tours, on an episode also featuring Elton John (airing February 18th 9:00 PM EST).
A virtuoso, Riggins has taken love and molded it into life through his talents and passion. He moved from Detroit to New York City at 19 where he played with, and was mentored by jazz great Betty Carter.
From there his career-to-date has been spent playing with legends of Jazz and the most influential voices of Hip-Hop. From recording with Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown to touring with Kanye West, Common, and more, he has spread across the gamut between genres. He has produced songs for Erykah Badu, The Roots, and Talib Kweli and played drums behind Bobby Hutchinson, Donald Byrd, and now Herbie Hancock.
Riggins currently lives in Los Angeles, and is working on his first self-titled album, showcasing his unique range as a producer, drummer, and emcee. His collaboration with Los Angeles native multi-instrumentalist Madlib entitled The Supreme Team is slated for a 2009 release on Stones Throw Records.
Spectacle: Elvis Costello With… showcases performances by legendary music acts of the past 40 years, as well as discourse on topics between music and life; from one-on-one interviews to themed panel discussions. Spectacle, about halfway through it’s first season, has thus-far featured President Bill Clinton, Tony Bennett, The Police, and Norah Jones among other sonic dignitaries.
Now I'm excited to finally be able to start promoting this release. For years, I've been bugging Finale wondering where this damn album is and when it's coming. The time is here and I was lucky enough to witness much of the final recording process of A Pipe Dream And A Promise. A could sit here and list all the selling points of this album, but it will speak for itself when you finally get to hear it all. Look out for an online video game reminiscent of Super Mario Brothers starring Finale that will allow fans to win a free Finale remix track by completing the game. The official A Pipe Dream And A Promise album release show will go down on April 4th in Detroit at Elements Gallery. More details to follow.
LISTEN: Finale - "Motor Music" (produced by Black Milk)
(Taken from the official press release) - A Pipe Dream and A Promise pulses with the evolving Detroit hip-hop sound; a multi-layered blend of hard-hitting beats, abstract electronic instrumentals, and illustrative lyrics that tell the personal story of a man's journey in a city on the cusp of a simultaneous economic breakdown and musical resurgence. Featuring production from J Dilla, Black Milk, Flying Lotus, Notzz, and Oddisee, the album showcases the work of a variety of exceptionally talented producers, with each offering a different musical foundation for Finale to showcase his lyrical onslaught.
Speaking about the title of the album, Finale says, "That's my definition of hip-hop. There are two sides to hip-hop or any dream that you follow. It starts as a dream that everyone says is a pipe dream. They deter you from your dreams. But as artists we promise ourselves we are going to follow our dreams."
Dropping on February 24th on the L.A.-based TRES Records is the first single "Business" from Detroit emcee Big Tone from his upcoming album The Art Of Ink, which will be released on March 17th digitally and April 14th on CD and vinyl. The 12" single for "Business", which will be pressed on green vinyl, features the b-side track "A Song Called Triumph" featuring Blu and is entirely produced by Big Tone himself. Just for a refresher, Big Tone released his debut album The Drought back in 2005 on ABB Records along with guest appearances on Ta’raach’s The Fevers, Shawn Jackson’s First of All, and J Dilla’s Welcome 2 Detroit.
