It's about three weeks until Movement '08: Detroit Electronic Music Festival during Memorial Day weekend (May 24-26) at Hart Plaza and I thought I'd take a journey back in time to my favorite moment ever at a DEMF. The night Stones Throw invaded Detroit with Peanut Butter Wolf, J-Rocc, then JAYLIB!!! Unfortunately this would be the last time I would see J. Dilla perform live and this night means so much to me. I'm still a little misty-eyed about it. As a treat, I have Jaylib's entire performance below for download. I recorded it on my mini-disc through a cheap mic that came with my PC's soundcard but the sound ain't that bad. I've had this all this time but through sheer laziness and the absence of a working cord to grab the audio from my mini-disc, you are not getting this until now. I have the Platinum Pied Pipers performance from the next night too, but I can't find it yet.

Now I don't really have much time to just go on and on about anyone in Detroit, but I wish I could. For the most part, my audience knows about many of the people I cover, but I should worry more about the new eyes glancing on the page and educate more about the best of the best in Detroit. With that, I introduce Danny Brown. As an emcee/producer from Detroit, he is the type of artist that could easily relate to the underground crowd while touching the hood/commercial listeners. Danny Brown is so dope recently he had House Shoes ending every sentence he spoke with "Danny Brown is the shit". A few years back, Brown scored a Detroit radio hit with the song "Yes" with his group Rese'vor Dogs (Danny Brown, Mike Green aka Mike Luke, Chips). Brown would also spend some time out in New York recording in all the legendary studio with Roc-A-Fella, but that unfortunately didn't pan out. Recently, Danny Brown dropped three mixtapes titled Detroit State Of Mind (download them below) filled with original material and productions. Right now, Danny Brown is working with G-Unit producer Nick Speed on his solo album Hot Soup along with a collaborative album with 87 called Profit Jones. Now I don't know if I really wanted to post this because I wasn't too entirely happy with how the set came out, but screw it. This was the first time DJing at a radio station so I didn't know what to expect from it. The whole set up of just being in a small quiet radio station room is just weird to me some of the mixing could have been ALOT better, but fuck it. Below is links and setlist to the DJ set and interview that I did on the Cultural Vibe radio show on Michigan State University's radio station 88.9FM last month. I just played a bunch of recent and upcoming Detroit and Detroit produced joints. I totally didn't want to hear myself talk but after giving it a listen, I don't mind hearing myself.

Hip-hop legend M.C. Lyte is currently working on a project with Detroit producer Jared Lee Gosselin and L.A.-based producer/singer/song writer Whitey White called Almost September. In the past Jared has work with a bunch of his motor city peers including productions under his Cyzer Sozet alias for many Iron Fist releases with the great Big Proof.
