On Friday, the benefit party for People's Records was crackin' seriously. Thanks to everyone that came out and all the DJs (DJ Dez, Brian Gillespie, Sicari, Uncle Paulie, Benny Ben) that spun for the night. Everyone had fun and People's Records owner Brad Hales thanks everyone dearly for all their help and looking to have the store up and running in a new location before April 1st. Stay tuned for more details.
People's Records, one of Detroit's most beloved vintage vinyl record stores, got destroyed from water damage during the huge fire at the Forest Arms Apartment building where the store is located. On Friday, March 14th at Northern Lights Lounge, we're throwing a party to help raise money so that People's Records can reopen bigger and better as soon as possible. People's Records is the place that every musician or record lover of all kinds in Detroit go to find those gems. All proceeds go to People's Records and vinyl donations are also being collected. We are asking for a minimum donation of $5 with a suggest donation of $10. If you would like to make an outside donations, please email djkfresh@rensoul.com.
The lineup for this evening will include yours truly K-Fresh, Brian Gillespie, DJ Dez, DJ Sicari, and People's Records owner Brad Hales. Please come out and support a great cause. Northern Lights Lounge is located at 660 W. Baltimore in Detroit.

On Friday, April 20th of 2007, Rensoul.com celebrated its sixth year in existence at Northern Lights Lounge in Detroit. The highlight performance of the night was a live freestyle J. Dilla tribute from the brokefunk masters John Arnold and Jeremy Ellis along with DJ Dez, and guest emcee appearances from Slum Village and Phat Kat. This was the first time I put together a real event for myself. I always did something in conjunction with other people’s nights, thus they got more of the credit still for the total enjoyment of the party. The idea for this night was a throwback to an idea on how I wanted to do my fifth anniversary, which never happened. Back in the Fall of 2005, I got the idea to do a fifth year bash for the following March, and I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to fly J. Dilla back to Detroit to headline the show. As a special bonus, I wanted to have John Arnold and Jeremy Ellis open up the show with DJ Dez and House Shoes spinning. We could have packed anywhere in Detroit – Alvin’s, Saint Andrews, 5th Avenue, etc – with that line up, and I was even thinking about orchestrating a Slum Village reunion at some point of the show. I didn’t have much money to my name at the time and wasn’t too educated in throwing shows, so I knew I would have to take on an outside investor and other help. My idea was set until pictures started surfacing on the Internet from the J. Dilla & Friends European Tour showing Dilla performing on stage very sickly and in a wheelchair. While others were optimistic that his health was getting better, I knew in my heart that it was his final run so I scrapped the idea for the show. As everyone knows, Dilla passed the following February. In hindsight, if I actually planned the show still, we would have had one hell of the setting for a monster Dilla tribute a month after his passing. Fast forwarding to 2007, I personally am DJing more in Detroit, mostly trying to help keep Dilla’s musical legacy alive. After a residency at Shelby Street News was ruined by violence and playing a string of terrible parties, I needed a change. One Friday night in February I went down to Northern Lights Lounge for CPM’s Hook & Sling party and got really drunk with some friends of mine. That night I was chatting with the bar’s manager Keggar about the demise of my residency, and he asked if I wanted to throw a party there. Two hours later, I knew what I wanted to do for the party and the following Tuesday we confirmed the April 20th date.Within a week of confirming the date, I presented John Arnold and Jeremy Ellis with the idea of doing a J. Dilla tribute in the same vein that they do their amazing freestyle brokefunk sessions. Live beat building using MPC’s, keyboards, guitars, and other crazy electronic gadgets. They loved the idea and actually soon became nervous about it all. The idea of having John and Jeremy do a Dilla tribute came from my friend David during a discussion back in January about the lack of Dilla celebrations planned for the week of his birth/death in February. So I revisited this idea for my sixth year anniversary. The energy in the room that night was amazing and everyone had a great time. As for the performance, I’ll just let the video do the talking. - K-Fresh |
